Welcome
Welcome
Welcome to Design Details: small touches that make you smile.
Each issue features some examples of nice details from the digital and physical worlds, along with the occasional not-so-nice detail where things could have been improved.
Note: I've renamed this newsletter from Nice UX Design to Design Details. Everything else remains the same.
Nice Details
This one goes up to 11
A fun easter egg in BBC iPlayer: the volume control goes up to 11, as a reference to This Is Spinal Tap.
Slack, now with 50% more tahini
Slack has a very silly feature where you can change the notification sound to somebody saying 'hummus'. There's a fun story behind why it's there.
Not-so-nice details
Unfortunate localisation in Windows 11
It's hard to do localisation well. In Windows 11, it appears that somebody did a find-and-replace for 'zip' and changed it to 'postcode' to localise into British English, resulting in this dialog that accidentally says 'Compress to postcode file'. Yes, mistakes happen all the time in software development, but it's kind of careless and shows a lack of attention to detail.
Note: Microsoft did fix this quickly, but still!
